Award-winning jazz-pop singer/songwriter Gina Brooklyn performs at the Hotel Cafe as part of the Writer’s Block night Tuesday, November 5. She’s also celebrating the release of her Amo Solo Te album, so we chatted about it all…

L.A. WEEKLY: When did you start singing, writing and performing, and when did you realize it could be a career?

GINA BROOKLYN: I started singing when I was 5, writing when I was 12, and when I was 13 I realized this was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I fell so deeply in love with music and haven’t stopped loving it ever since.

Describe your sound…

Most people compare my sound to Jewel, Sarah McLachlan, Norah Jones & a touch of Amy Winehouse. If they all had a child it’d be me. Haha! But genre-wise, my music is folky, jazzy and poppy.

You’ve won a number of awards — which are you most proud of?

I think the award(s) I’m most proud of would be being placed as a finalist in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest twice! The first time was in 2017, for a country song, and this year for an EDM song. It’s an honor to have gotten that far.

What can we expect from this L.A. set?

This L.A. set will only be three songs due to it being a writers round, but I am so excited! I’m gonna go on at around 9:40 p.m. What I hope to do with my music is to touch people’s hearts and souls. I want everyone who comes to the performance to know how loved they are, and to really make them think. That’s all I could ever hope for. I just wanna make them feel as deeply as they possibly can.

When it’s done, what else do you have coming up?

When this gig is done, I’ll have a brand new holiday/winter-y song coming out on November 15. It’s called “Winter” and I can’t wait for you guys to hear it. I will also be back in L.A. within the next few months. We plan on traveling there every month/every other month for shows and co-writes and all that fun stuff. I also have a few local gigs in Ohio coming up too. You can check out my website, ginabrooklyn.com for more info.
