“The past is cracking off and the future is rushing in.” Sandra Bernhard: Sandrology represents a new kind of science, one that takes hypocritical politics, extremist religion and prideful stupidity to task as satire-worthy targets in its “pop culture anthropology.” Also, the show has way more sex and amped-up rock music than do most science labs. These days politics is increasingly inseparable from broader cultural issues, and a lot has changed in just the past few weeks (for both better and for scarier) in two areas that mean a lot to Bernhard — girl power and LGBT equality. “There's a lot to rant about and I've always been one to take it on,” she says. “It's a reflection of a fractured society on the brink of great change and evolution. What is most wrong with America is a strange mixture of complacency and superiority and a terrible inferiority complex. People resent Obama for being brilliant. They would rather wallow in mediocrity than let go of their fear and racism. But the shift has occurred, and no matter how hard they try to pull it back, we have already moved vastly forward.” So as Bernhard debuts her brand-new election-year one-woman blitz in a limited REDCAT run, it seems like her intense, sexy, hilarious, spirited, honest and daring satirical comedy and music also is showing signs of optimism. “What I try to do every day is to read, educate myself, enjoy beauty in nature, be kind to the planet, love my family and friends, activate and stay on the edge of the revolution, energize my audience and really appreciate my blessings.” But don't worry, there's still plenty of sex, electric guitar, swearing and leather.
