As some celebrate the 40th anniversary of New York's Stonewall Riots with speeches and beer busts, L.A. photographer Anthony Friedkin will lend a more local perspective with an exhibition of images covering Angeleno gay life over a four-year period following that rebellion. Gay, A Photographic Essay 1969-1972 captures the silly and the gritty, while reminding us of a time when being gay wasn't just unpopular, but for all intents and purposes illegal.

This Saturday the show's venue, drkrm.gallery, will host an opening-night reception for Friedkin, whose work has run in publications from The Advocate to Time, and hung in the alphabet art soup of LACMA, MOMA and SFMOMA, not to mention the Getty.  drkrm.gallery, 2121 San Fernando Rd., Suite 3, L.A.; Saturday, June 20, 7-10 p.m. Exhibit runs through August 3. (323) 223-6867.
