UPDATE at 2:18 p.m. Thursday, March 24: The L.A. Fire Department has new details. See more below.

Comedian Garry Shandling has died, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed today.

TMZ first reported the death, saying that a 911 call was made from his Los Angeles home today and that he was subsequently hospitalized.

The site said he was alive when he arrived but died at the facility.

The comedian was 66.

LAPD officer Rosario Herrera confirmed Shandling's death to L.A. Weekly.

His HBO sitcom The Larry Sanders Show was described by Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane today as “the greatest single-camera comedy of all time.”

Shandling recently appeared on an episode of Jerry Seinfeld's web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, which was subtitled, “It's great that Garry Shandling is still alive.”

In the episode, Shandling and Seinfeld reminisce about their stand-up and television days in L.A.

UPDATE at 2:18 p.m. Thursday, March 24: The Los Angeles Fire Department issued a statement with more information about the death. Citing privacy law, the LAFD did not name Shandling.

The department said it responded to a medical emergency in the 1700 block of N. Correa Way, in the Mandeville Canyon area of Brentwood, at 10:40 a.m. today.

“LAFD paramedics transported an adult male to a local hospital, where he was subsequently pronounced deceased,” the department said in its statement. “The LAFD will have no further comment, nor will the department release patient information, due to federal healthcare privacy laws.”
