The movement to put the full legalization of marijuana before California voters was victorious Wednesday, when the state certified the pro-pot ballot measure.

Secretary of State Debra Bowen certified the initiative, which would legalize, regulate and tax marijuana, after organizers turned in 694,248 signatures — more than enough valid signatures to meet the 433,971 threshold, she stated.

Oakland pot shop owner Richard Lee organized and funded the signature-gathering drive. If passed in November, the law would allow those older than 21 to possess an ounce or less of marijuana. Residents can also cultivate it, and its sale would be taxed and regulated like alcohol.

The attorney general's summary of the initiative's language can be found here.
