FROS VS. STACHES

We were flooded with follicle fabulousness last week, as two sold-out Henry Fonda shows had us pondering the question: What’s more ironically cool right now, the afro or the mustache? In the ’fro corner, we have, of course, Wolfmother singer Andrew Stockdale, who seems to get mystical power from his fuzzy puff, fueling the band’s Black Sabbath-y wails and riffs. The show was the most packed we’ve maybe ever seen at the Music Box, but the sounds were too jammy and shrill. Okay, we shoulda known better than to forget our earplugs. Same place next night, it was a Josh Homme–less Eagles of Death Metal, who served upa giddy, grindingly good performance. Singer Jesse Hughes’ shades and sexy ’stache kinda make him look like the construction worker from the Village People, but rest assured, this fella loves the Hollywood ladies (he said so many times), and the band’s set, featuring covers of Stealers Wheel’s “Stuck in the Middle with You,” the Stones’“Brown Sugar” and the Ramones’ “Beat on the Brat,” was definitely the better of the two shows, if only by a hair. Seen rocking out in the front lobby at EODM, Entourage’s Adrian Grenier, whose unibrow we think just may be the next hair trend to take over Hipsterville.

PROJECTSTUDWAY

We might not really need another fashion-related reality TV show, but the sheer charisma of Givenchy menswear designer Ozwald Boateng suggests House of Boateng (to begin airing this Thursday, June 22, on the Sundance Channel) might be different. Last Thursday’s party celebrating the premiere at the Museum of TV and Radio sure was. With DJ AM spinning and dapper dudes like Jamie Foxx, Scott Patterson (Gilmore Girls’ Luke) and new papa Gavin Rossdale in attendance, this one was all about male eye candy. Expect the show’s beefcake to be similarly tasty.

WEEKEND WARRIORS

What to do . . . What to do? Last weekend we coulda put on Cobrasnake-like ’80s aerobic garb at the “Workout to Makeout” party at the Little Radio warehouse with Mstrkrft, or we coulda donned the deck shoes and downed the Dramamine for Sean Patrick and Steve Aoki’s floating dance-athon (on a real riverboat!) in Long Beach, or opted for LA.Myopenbar.com’sbooze-soaked bash at Hear Gallery, featuring DJs galore and Every Move a Picture live. In the end we passed on all of ’em and decided to chill at a pal’s more intimate birthday gathering at Tangier on Hillhurst. Big mistake. Warning to those who think about going there on the weekend: It’s a sauna in the front bar on a hot night, the AC’ed back room is usually reserved, and if you try to sit there (when it’s early and empty beforehand), a very beotchy hostess will treat you like trash and basically kick ya out. Needless to say, we won’t be coming back anytime soon. Luckily, there was one more shindig on the calendar, Stephen Hauptfuhr’selectro au-go-go at Mountain Bar in Chinatown, featuring the fun and fucked-up sounds of Punk Bunny and Berlin’s DJ Abunda Bida spinning so-bad-it’s-good ’80s sounds. Across the courtyard, the Ooga Booga boutique even offered a kegger and more live bands. The old wishing pond we used to throw pennies into may be gone, but looks like you can still have good luck in Chinatown.
