Instead of analyzing Frida Kahlo as an icon, radical, libertine — and incidentally an artist — sister painter/author/feminist Judy Chicago starts with the art in her new book, Frida Kahlo: Face to Face (Prestel Publishing), and touches on Kahlo's other aspects through her canvases. Co-written with art historian Frances Borzello, this oversized tome reproduces Frida's art as well as the work of others whose themes overlap with hers, including her husband, Diego Rivera, as well as Henri Rousseau, Georgia O'Keeffe, Yoko Ono, Cindy Sherman, Chicago herself and many others. The symbiotic forces of power and vulnerability are on full-color display herein and tonight Chicago will show 'em, discuss Kahlo the Artist (rather than Kahlo the Yet-Another-Hipster-T-Shirt) and sign books.
