The city of L.A.'s longstanding efforts to bring Wi-Fi to the people just took a small step forward.

The office of Councilman Tom LaBonge says an announcement will be made Thursday regarding a new pilot program that will make Wi-Fi available for free at six city parks. Those are said to include Venice Beach, Echo Park, Pershing Square, Cabrillo Beach, Griffith Observatory, and Reseda Park.

It's not clear to us exactly when these tasty waves of data will be available. LaBonge's folks are already pointing you to a new portal, however. According to a statement:

Visitors simply navigate to “m.laparks.org” using their Internet browser to start using the LA Parks mobile web.

Yay. Technology.

Wi-Fi will be available at “designated hotspot locations” at the parks, LaBonge's folks state. For Venice Beach, which is a two-mile stretch of linear boardwalk, it will be interesting to see where those locations end up.

The Wi-Fi program is called Oh, Ranger! Wi-Fi™, and it's sponsored, of course, by Toyota. (God forbid the second largest city in America, which has pledged $39 million of your tax dollars to a Chinese developer, pay for its own Wi-Fi system).

LaBonge will be joined by fellow Councilmen Bob Blumenfield and Mitch O’Farrell during the 2 p.m. announcement Thursday at Griffith Observatory.
