Hockey fans are crazier than many other sports fans, which you can tell by watching hockey games themselves, and also by the fact that hockey fans like to throw huge cephalopods onto arena ice.  So maybe it makes sense that when NBCSN decided to find a product to help promote the NHL playoff series between the L.A. Kings and the Anaheim Ducks, it decided to give out free ice pops made not from regular ice but from the actual ice of Staples Center, the Los Angeles Kings' home arena. Like that stuff the players skate on.]

The ice pops in question also include normal things, like fresh fruit and purified water – they weren't just axed from the arena and stuck on a stick, although it might seem a bit too much like that for non-hockey fans. But hey, that's not the target audience, is it?

To celebrate the Kings, who are doing pretty well so far in the playoffs (they lead the Ducks 2-1 in the second round, after losing last night's game), NBCSN is launching its Home Ice Pop Truck Tour, which means it will be handing out those arena ice pops, with “each pop handmade to match team colors!” Saturday, May 10, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at Hollywood and Highland.

They were doing this yesterday too, but they didn't tell us soon enough for us to tell you. (Complain to the PR folks, not us. We love arena ice pops and heartily approve of stunt sports food, having grown up with people who routinely wore blocks of cheese on their heads.)

After this Saturday, the Home Ice Pop Truck tour will continue on to  Anaheim, then to Chicago and the Twin Cities, that being the rest of Hockeyland. Go Kings. Which should, of course, be a given.
