Driver Arrested after DUI Multi-Vehicle Collision near Fruitridge Road
SACRAMENTO, CA (August 1, 2023) – Friday night, a total of four people suffered injuries following a wrong-way crash on Highway 99.
The incident happened at around 10:45 p.m. along northbound State Route 99, north of Fruitridge Road.
Based on the report, a 2013 BMW driven by a 19-year-old Sacramento man traveled into the opposite lanes of the highway.
As a result, the BMW sideswiped a 20-year-old Orangevale woman driving a 2019 Toyota. The impact of the first collision caused the BMW to veer sideways and hit a 2020 Dodge driven by a 27-year-old Modesto man.
Subsequently, the front end of the Dodge broadsided the BMW, causing the two vehicles to catch on fire. The Dodge also struck a 2015 Lexus driven by a 31-year-old woman in the next lane over.
The male Dodge driver ended up hospitalized in critical condition. Meanwhile, paramedics treated the driver of the Lexus and Toyota at the scene for minor injuries.
Responding officers also took the BMW driver into custody for showing signs of intoxication. He is currently at the hospital for major injuries.
At this time, the identities of those involved in the wrong-way crash remain undisclosed to the public. On a Facebook post, the CHP – South Sacramento showed photos from the incident and warned motorists about driving under the influence.
Thinking, reasoning and muscle coordination are essential in operating a vehicle safely. However, these are impaired when alcohol and certain medications or illegal drugs are in the body. Never drive while impaired as the consequences can be devastating for you and for others. When buzzed or drunk, it is best to request an Uber, Lyft, or taxi. If possible, reach out to a family member or a friend to come and pick you up. By being responsible, you can keep yourself and others on the road safe.
