Former Mexican Mafia member Danny Roman, 64, died from multiple stab wounds suffered at the Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison in Corcoran, California.

According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Roman was allegedly assaulted by two inmates, Raul Alvarado and Edward Cisneros. Both men were restrained as correctional officers proceeded to perform life-saving procedures on Roman.

Roman was transported to the medical facility and pronounced dead at 11:11 a.m., Wednesday.

Both Alvarado and Cisneros were serving life sentences, with the possibility of parole.

Roman had been serving a life sentence since 1985, and according to the United States Department of Justice, had been running gang activity from inside the prison by giving orders to his daughter Vianna Roman and “Harpy’s Gang” leader Manuel Valencia. Using coded language, messages were passed back and forth between Roman, Vianna and Valencia, allowing Roman to oversee several Latino gangs in Los Angeles. Both Vianna and Valencia had been given prison sentences in a federal racketeering case in 2015.

The stabbing weapons used in Roman’s killing were retrieved while Cisneros and Alvarado were placed in separate housing as the investigation continues.
