Sky's Gourmet Tacos has been on Pico Boulevard for eighteen years, serving tacos and burritos, tortas and vegetarian specials, in a bright green and cheery space, with tables outside and a patio in back. About a year ago, owner Barbara Burrell, known as Sky, decided to look into getting a truck, thinking that it would be fun, but in no rush to jump into the mobile truck convoy. Tonight her truck, a retrofitted, customized diesel behemoth that is painted an almost blindingly bright fuschia, will hit the streets. Well, not the streets exactly, so much as the particular street outside the restaurant, where the truck will be parked and fully operational from 6 – 8 p.m. Yes, we realize that the time coincides nearly exactly with Game 1 of the NBA Finals. Burrell knows that too. But even Laker fans need to eat.

Burrell says that the truck menu will be tailored from the restaurant menu — billed as Mexican food with a “splash of soul” — so think smaller, more specialized versions of the regular fare. As for the route of the truck, Burrell is not entirely sure, but she wants to put college football games and the beaches on the schedule. USC, UCLA, Malibu. When we spoke with Burrell this afternoon, she was in the process of decorating the restaurant for a party, a truck-warming party if you will. A tent, sangria in the back, plenty of food both at the truck and inside the restaurant. Depending on how things go tonight, you can either celebrate or drown your sorrows in that sangria. Either way.
