Featuring a sprawling lineup of more than 60 underground, up-and-coming and seasoned acts — curated by L.A. cultural mainstays like dublab, L.A. Record, Razorcake, Low End Theory, Kingsize Soundlabs, the Ship Studios — Eagle Rock Music Fest is one of the most exciting festivals in town. This year, fest producer Brian Akio Martinez booked a very solid line-up, with our favorites clustered around the Emerging and the Low End Theory stages.

Let's not mince words: Psychedelic up-and-comers Feeding People absolutely crushed the Emerging Stage. Scheduled to play at 6 p.m., they ended up headlining, playing the 10PM spot after HEALTH (who also killed it with their forty-minute long noise-rock set). Girls hugging the barricade screamed for lead singer Jessie Jones during the band's sound check, and while Jones was too flustered to respond, organist Janey Riech blew kisses at Feeding People's fans who tried to wait patiently for the band to start.
Opening with “Big Mother” off their self-titled Burger LP, Jones howled, “You can't see but it's clear/you can't breathe in here/your lungs will seize with air/but you can't leave from here.” By the end of their set, it was clear Feeding People had made some converts.

The Low End Theory stage — in the middle of Colorado Blvd. this year rather than crammed down a side street — had the most exciting lineup, featuring all of the Low End Theory residents, including Daddy Kev, Nobody, Gaslamp Killer, D-Styles, Nocando, as well as special guests Flying Lotus, Nosaj Thing, Tokimonsta, Dibia$e, Teebs and Jonwayne. It was some of the best beatmakers in the world backed by the Pure Filth sound system, and we got to watch for free.
JonWayne had some of the best energy on the Low End Stage, with a beats set, a short Darkhorsemen segment with Dibia$e, and then rapping during Nosaj Thing's set. A sizable crowd came early to hear him premiere tracks from his upcoming Alpha Pup release The Death of Andrew, as well as twisted takes on Bowser and his recent rap mixtape “I Don't Care.”

Several thousand people showed up for Gaslamp Killer and JonWayne, but by the time Flying Lotus came to the stage at the end of the night, what must have been over ten thousand people swarmed Colorado Blvd, and the level of excitement was overwhelming.
“Low End Theory still celebrates hip hop, motherfuckers,” FlyLo yelled to the crowd before dropping GZA, Tyler, the Creator, and then Lil Z x OtrosCosmosis' hilarious “I Think I'm FlyLo.” He invited Thundercat to the stage — who should've been booked anyway — and they played “Daylight,” off of Thundercat's recent Brainfeeder debut The Golden Age of Apocapyse. Throughout the set, kids hurled themselves over the speakers lining the stage, before being tossed out by pissed off security.

Then it was Lotus' turn to stage dive: he came out from behind his laptop and turned his back to the audience and let himself fall into the crowd, a move even Gaslamp Killer said he was too afraid to try. FlyLo floated around in front of the barricade for about a minute before being pushed back onto the stage. “You know I can't get out of here without some rock shit,” FlyLo said before ending his set with “Paint It Black.”
