San Fran punk vets Flipper are apparently coming to the end of their period with David Yow of the Jesus Lizard fronting them. It’s been a fascinating collaboration from the off — Flipper have seen members come and go over the years (notably Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic), but this saw them working with a guy with a lengthy and impressive legacy of his own. What will the future hold? We asked longtime drummer Steve DePace…

L.A. WEEKLY: I read that you’re coming to the end of the period with David Yow — is that correct?

STEVE DEPACE: That is correct, yes. David told me he hasn’t wanted to be in a band full time, since the breakup of Jesus Lizard. He has an amazing day job, designing movie posters, billboards, print ads, etc… He also acts in lots of movies and is always auditioning for rolls, so his dance card is pretty full. He did 10 shows with us back in 2015 and when I approached him in January about helping us celebrate our 40th anniversary, he agreed to do the year of shows with us. We had a great time all year playing dates around the U.S. as well as a month in the U.K. and Europe. This upcoming show at the Roxy will be the last show with David, with the exception of perhaps a special event that might present itself along the way.

What does the future hold for Flipper?

Flipper will continue in 2020! We are planning to reissue our back catalog and will also be releasing a live album from this year with David on vocals. I am planning a couple of gallery events to include lots of Flipper photos and memorabilia. More collaborations with other bands and recording projects. I’m working on a feature documentary on Flipper with Alisa Daglio directing. I am also planning at least one book on Flipper and more touring throughout next year. So, we will be busy!

What can we expect from this L.A. set?

I don’t think we’ve ever played at the Roxy before, so this might be a first for Flipper. As far as playing on the Sunset Strip, our last shows were at the Viper Room and Whiskey in the summer of 1995. So, this will be our first show back on the Sunset Strip in 24 years. We have Mondo Generator and Angry Samoans Later Years on the bill — should be fun!

And then? Will there be any more recorded output?

There will be something, but we don’t know what or when yet.

Flipper plays with Mondo Generator, Angry Samoans, Later Years and Total Massacre at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, November 27 at the Roxy.
