Beginning July 1st, people convicted of drunk driving in four California counties including Los Angeles will be required to install dashboard Breathalyzer devices that would prevent their car engines from starting if alcohol is detected. The bill was signed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger last fall and goes into effect in Alameda, Los Angeles, Sacramento, and Tulare counties, according to the Associated Press.

The pilot program, which targets first time DUI offenders, is expected to be reviewed in 2015 and. if successful, it would be expanded statewide.

Lobbyists against the bill said that the technology should only be reserved for repeat drunken drivers.
