Wild remakes of venerable operas by Mozart are nothing new. Just last year, South Africa's Isango Ensemble re-imagined The Magic Flute in a supremely inventive production that replaced the orchestra with an octet of marimbas. This weekend, L.A. Opera presents the world-premiere staging of Vid Guerrerio's irreverent English-language (interspersed with Spanglish) update of Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro. In Guerrerio's hands, the action is moved to the present, where the title character (José Adán Pérez) is an immigrant worker who finds himself down and out and without a green card in Beverly Hills. The cast also includes soprano Maria Elena Altany and Craig Colclough.
