I believe it was the famed poets Missing Persons who penned, “Nobody walks in L.A.” How true. Why would we, when sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic is really what we do best here? Franklin Avenue's Mike Schneider got this crazy notion a few years ago to walk one particular street annually. So far, participants in The Great Los Angeles Walk have pounded Pico and Santa Monica boulevards to the beach from their easternmost points. This year, it's the pesky 'vards of Washington and Adams. Says Schneider, “We've all seen Los Angeles by car, but it's a whole different experience to get to know our fine city by foot. March along 14 miles of historic L.A. with a hundred or so other Angelenos at the same time, and you've got a story to tell around the Thanksgiving table the following week — plus license to scarf down that third piece of pie.” Promised sights: the Automobile Club of Southern California headquarters, the Golden State Mutual Life headquarters, St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Roman Catholic Church and Ray Charles' old recording studio. Meeting spot: Shrine Auditorium
