The FBI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) made a public service announcement Monday, warning that attempts are being made to “undermine confidence” in the election process and create a feeling that voter registration data is being hacked.

The FBI said ‘foreign actors’ and cyber criminals are likely using social media to spread the false information and create doubt in 2020’s voting systems.

“During the 2020 election season, foreign actors and cyber criminals are spreading false and inconsistent information through various online platforms in an attempt to manipulate public opinion, discredit the electoral process, and undermine confidence in U.S. democratic institutions,” the PSA said.

The announcement highlighted that U.S. voter information is publicly available without the need for “hacks” or “leaks” and the information being spread about registration data “hacks” are false.

Both the FBI and CSIA have urged the public to check the credibility of any online source, verify the content through multiple sources and report any suspicious posts on social media platforms.
