The neighborhood of Glassell Park will have a weekly farmers market to call its own today. After the grand opening hours from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the market will set up every Thursday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Goodwill Community Enrichment Center. It will be the latest member in the expanding network of fresh food marketplaces across Los Angeles. Just last month, San Marino launched its own farmers market.  

The effort to establish a market in Glassell Park has been a collaborative one, including the Sustainable Economic Enterprises of Los Angeles or SEE-LA, the offices of Councilmember Mitch O'Farrell and Goodwill. ]

According to SEE-LA Senior Market Manager Alexander Agajanian, the plan to launch a market in the northeast L.A. neighborhood has been in the works for several years, initially made possible by a grant from the USDA.

There will be about 10 farmers and vendors at the grand opening of the market. Once regular weekly hours are assumed, the number will double with more to be added in the future. The aim is to approach additions to the roster based on neighborhood demand, said Agajanian.

Soledad Goats and Ace Ranch will be among the farms and purveyors offering fruits, produce and artisanal goods. Hot food vendors slated to set up at the market include Delmy's Pupusas, Ari's Natural Foods, Front Porch Pops and GypsyEats. And while it might be the smaller of the farmers markets around town for now, it'll be a welcome alternative for locals who can't make it to the ones in Glendale, East Hollywood or Downtown on Thursdays.
