Fanatic! Just back from two weeks of Gutterdammerung shows. Long flights out of Zagreb yesterday have left me a little foggy today but I am crawling forward.

I was in a hotel in thrilling Brentford, England, days ago, listening to all the tracks we assembled for this show, and found it to work well with the warm weather I was in.

Ian MacKaye and I were talking about Jimi Hendrix the other day. I think I had told him that I was going to the Isle of Wight, the location of one of the last of Hendrix’s performances. We got on the topic of Hendrix’s show at the Berkeley Community Center 05-30-70, where he did the ripping version of Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode.” I think Ian was in at Berkeley for an Evens show and was allowed to check out the stage Hendrix performed on. That track is at the end of our first hour.

Warm weather is perfect for listening to Jimi Hendrix. If you get a chance, you should check out all the live shows he did in the summer of 1970. He would be gone by September of that year. Some of them have intense backstories, like Isle of Wight and the Isle of Fehmarn show, his last one. I will leave it to you to pursue that information.

One of the most important facts about Hendrix, at least in my opinion, is that he met with a lot of resistance with his later material. It was good but a lot of people were not ready for it. I think it is his last period of creativity that was his best. Really worth checking out.

Music comes with a lot of information. A ton. How much you want to dig in is up to you. If you just want to get a record, dig it and let it be, that’s great, but there is always more to know, more to find out. There are bands I have been into for over 30 years and am still finding things, from facts to releases, that I didn’t know existed.

As I have been writing these notes here in L.A., I have been listening to all the tracks one more time. Listening to the William Bell track now. One of the best songs ever. Isaac Hayes told me that he and Bell used to have a friendly competition to see who could write better songs. Can you imagine what it would have been like to have been around that scene?
