KCRW BROADCAST #112 for Saturday, April 30.

Fanatics! This week our Fanatic Freak Flag is at half mast as we say goodbye to Poly Styrene, great vocalist of X-Ray Spex, who passed away last Monday from breast cancer. The band was one of the first on London's break out Punk Rock scene and also one of the best. The band never recorded much, one iconic album and a few b-sides and then that was all. When the music is as good as theirs was, that's really all you need.

So, tonight, we will start our show with the band's perhaps best known song and in the second hour, play the band's album, Germ-Free Adolescents , in its entirety.

It is a little much perhaps to miss someone you never met but the fact that Poly is no longer in the world is very sad to me. This is music I have listened to for well over half of my life.

Here's nice write up.

If you take a look, you will see that we have all kinds of good thangs all around our X Ray Spex fest. A very cool band called Gentle, a great Tumbleweed track from a recently released retrospective of their work, brand new TV Smith, a very interesting track from a 2CD set I strongly recommend called Persian Electronic Music on the Sub Rosa label. I bought the record because the title fairly screamed “Check me out!” so I did. Very worthwhile.

We finish with a great band covering a great band. The Melvins doing and MC5 song. Sadly, we lose the great Ploy Styrene but we have her great music to play and pass around.

It's going to be a great two hours of music so listen loud and STAY FANATIC!!! –Henry
