The Academy Awards just announced the nominees for this year. As usual, we’re all going to have a hard time rooting for a winner — these year’s nominees are all deserving to receive an Oscar; there’s Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Austin Butler (Elvis), Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin), and other amazing thespians for male lead actors.

Cate Blanchett (Tàr) is also nominated for the leading role as an actress — along with Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and Ana de Armas (Blonde). However, as unsurprising as the nominees are, you’d be more likely to be surprised that there are other actors of the Oscar nominees’ caliber that haven’t won the award yet.

Some Incredible Actors Who Never Won an Oscar

Remember the time when everyone was rooting for Leonardo DiCaprio to win an Oscar? So much so, that it became a meme. And when he finally did, it broke the internet. Maybe it’s about time we talk about how these people haven’t won the award yet!

Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp (who made news last year because of his trial that he ultimately won) has always been loved by his fans — and even more so now. But despite being nominated three times before (for his roles in Pirates of the Caribbean, Finding Neverland, and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street) Johnny Depp hasn’t been able to go home with an Oscar yet.

Ewan McGregor

Perhaps the most famous character Ewan McGregor played is “Obi-Wan Kenobi” in the Star Wars franchise But this Scottish actor can do more than use a lightsaber. His role as a young poet in Moulin Rouge! shows that he can sing too! Of course, let’s not forget his hauntingly amazing performance as a heroin addict in Trainspotting. However, as revered as he is for his acting skills, Ewan McGregor hasn’t been an Academy Award winner.

Amy Adams

Countless viewers look forward to Amy Adams and her fashion choice in the Academy’s Red Carpet — and her dresses and gowns that complement her fiery red hair never disappoint! But this Oscars’ frequent attendee and nominee hasn’t snatched an award in the said event yet; Amy Adams has been nominated for her roles in Junebug, Doubt, The Fighter, The Master, American Hustle, and Vice.

Liam Neeson

Liam Neeson is an actor that almost everyone can recognize right away. Just like his fellow Star Wars actor Ewan McGregor, Liam Neeson, too, hasn’t won an Academy Award. What’s even more surprising is he was only nominated once — and that was last 1994 when he starred in Schindler’s List.

Sir Ian McKellen

If someone is knighted by the Queen herself for their “service to the performing arts,” you know that the actor is as good as they can get! Not only is Sir Ian McKellen “Magneto” and “Gandalf” on screen, but he’s also the theater’s Shakespeare stories staple — as “Macbeth” in Macbeth, “Romeo” in Romeo and Juliet, and “Prince Hamlet” in Hamlet. Therefore, he doesn’t exude “main character vibes,” he is the main character! What he still hasn’t been, sadly, is to be an Oscar award recipient — hopefully, soon!

Taraji P. Henson

Not many stars can encapsulate their characters and get the audience to feel the raw emotions the actor conveys, but Taraji P. Henson does exactly that (perhaps in every film that she’s ever been in) — especially in her portrayal of real-life mathematician Katherine Johnson in Hidden Figures. Even though she has countless accolades to speak about, an Oscar isn’t one of them yet. Taraji P. Henson, however, has been nominated for an Academy Award before as a supporting actress in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

All Things Considered,

The Oscars is a prestigious event that many talented actors deserve to win at some point in their careers. Not only that, we, viewers — especially the Angelenos — know that rooting for our favorite celebrities to bag an award is just part of our LA culture. Sadly, some of our most beloved actors never won an Oscar — maybe soon!
