The family of an unarmed, autistic man fatally shot by police in Koreatown over the weekend has secured legal representation, according to CBS2 News.

The shooting on South Vermont Avenue near James M. Wood Boulevard, on the southeastern edge of Koreatown, happened shortly after midnight Saturday. Two Los Angeles Police Department gang officers confronted the man, who was on foot, and he failed to comply with their orders.

Steven Eugene Washington was killed by a bullet to the head; both officers, identified as Allan Corrales and George Diego, opened fire after the man reached for his waistband, police said.

Devastated family members said Washington had the intellectual ability of someone in his early teens and might not have understood the officers.

At a news conference, Assistant Chief Earl Paysinger seemed almost apologetic and offered the department's condolences to Washington's family.

The officers have been reassigned while the LAPD's Force Investigation Division and the District Attorney's office both investigate the deadly use of force.
