Rising electropop star Cowgirl Clue performs at the Roxy this week, so we chatted about that show, her fascinating name, and what the future holds…
L.A. WEEKLY: When did you start writing and producing, and when did you know it could be a career?
COWGIRL CLUE: I began producing in the Summer of 2015. I didn’t really have a career oriented goal in mind per say or even know how to structure a song in the beginning. I mostly just knew I wanted to make electronic music that I could connect with for fun and learn as I go. After DJing most of my teenage years, it was a pretty natural progression to start creating dance music.
Describe your style…
Sonically speaking, I’d say it’s a hybrid of a lot of musical styles falling under a neo-drum & bass-bubblegum-rave -hyperpop type category. Fashion-wise, my style is a mix of a faerie, punk and glam.
You used to go by Wu-Wu, correct? Why the name change, and why the “Cowgirl?” You’re not exactly playing country music…
Yeah, when I started making music Wu-Wu was sort of an inside joke that didn’t translate so well to the rest of the world and didn’t have much longevity. When I changed it during the early stages of my project, having yet to release an album, I thought Clue would be a smooth transition for my audience, adding a little sparkle with “Cowgirl” and it just sort of came together for me. Although I am originally from Texas and I am not currently making country music, Cowgirl Clue was the most fitting alias I could possibly identify my personality with.
What can we expect from this Roxy set?
This will be my first headline in L.A. since I released my debut album, Icebreaker, in May and I’m really excited about it. It’s going to be a night full of really amazing, upcoming electronic artists (DJ Internet Girl, Lealani and Mood Killer). I would imagine there will be a healthy dose of hyper energy and special moments to cap off everyone’s year. Also, the show is apart of the Jingle Bell Roxy Benefit Residency, so I am encouraging everyone to bring something for the Union Rescue Mission to donate. Which you can find the list of items to bring here.

When that’s done, what’s next?
I have a lot of things planned for next year that I am pretty excited to announce soon. I just released a new music video for a song titled “Tainted” and toured/supported some really great artists last month (The Drums, Dorian Electra, Cherry Glazerr, and Kero Kero Bonito). I’ve been writing new material which I am hoping to have my next single out early next year. Most likely some touring to follow and maybe an EP late next year, but don’t hold me to it 😉
Cowgirl Clue plays with Internet Girl, Lealani and Mood Killer at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 18 at the Roxy.
