When Megan Pastrana went through her own immigration journey with her husband, she discovered a crucial gap in the system: no one was addressing both the legal complexities and emotional challenges couples face during US immigration. Now, as CEO of Immigration for Couples, she’s revolutionizing immigration legal services by combining expert legal guidance with mindset coaching, helping international couples navigate not just paperwork, but their entire journey together. We sat down with Megan to explore her insights and experiences in this important area of immigration.
Megan, you experienced the immigration process firsthand before becoming an immigration attorney. How does that personal experience shape your approach to helping couples
Living through the process myself completely transformed how I practice immigration law. I remember sitting on both sides of that desk, being the anxious partner wondering if we were doing everything right, and now being the attorney guiding couples through the same journey. That experience taught me that traditional legal services aren’t enough. Couples need someone who understands that every delayed document or extended waiting period isn’t just a legal hurdle – it’s an emotional challenge that impacts their relationship. That’s why we don’t just handle paperwork; we help couples reframe the entire experience as an opportunity for growth rather than just an obstacle to overcome.
Your firm combines legal expertise with mindset coaching, quite unusual for a law practice. What made you realize couples needed both?
It actually came from watching so many couples focus solely on “getting through” the immigration process, almost putting their relationship on hold until they got their papers. And I thought, “What if we could help couples not just survive this process, but actually use it to strengthen their relationship?” When we started incorporating mindset coaching alongside our legal services, we saw a remarkable shift. Couples began viewing the waiting periods not as frustrating delays, but as opportunities to deepen their communication and build resilience together. It’s beautiful to watch couples emerge from the process not just with their legal status secured, but with a stronger foundation for their future together.
What’s the biggest misconception couples have when they first come to you?
Oh, this one’s easy, most couples think it’s just about filling out some forms and waiting a few months. They often come to me saying, “We’re in love, we’re getting married, how hard can this be?” Then I have to gently explain that we’re looking at a journey that could take a year or more, with multiple steps and potential challenges along the way. But here’s what I love: when we shift their perspective from seeing it as just paperwork to viewing it as part of their love story, everything changes. It becomes less about counting days and more about making each day count in strengthening their relationship.
How do you help couples maintain their connection during long-distance periods of the immigration process?
This is such a crucial part of what we do! I always tell couples that distance doesn’t have to mean disconnection. We work with them to create intentional communication plans – it’s not just about daily FaceTime calls, but about finding creative ways to stay involved in each other’s lives. I had this one couple who started a virtual book club just for the two of them, and another who would cook the same meal together over video chat. It’s about finding those meaningful ways to share experiences even when you’re apart. The key is turning what could be a painful waiting period into a time of deeper emotional connection.
What’s the most rewarding part of your work with couples
Without a doubt, it’s witnessing those moments when couples realize they’ve grown stronger through this process. Just last week, I had a couple tell me that going through the immigration journey actually helped them develop better communication skills and a deeper understanding of each other. That’s what gets me excited every morning – knowing we’re not just helping couples get their legal status, we’re helping them build a stronger foundation for their life together. When they look back and say, “We’re better partners because of this journey,” that’s when I know we’ve done our job right.
