Phoenix-based odd-folk/soul ensemble What Laura Says plays Three Clubs tonight as part of the Rumble Tour with A B & The Sea and So Many Wizards.

The five-piece has a new album just out, Bloom Cheek, on Terpsikhore Records, the North Carolina label founded by the Annuals.

It's chock full of lush little ditties like the goofily named “Lambhair McDaniel,” where a folksy swagger is filled out by blue-eyed swagger and quavering vocals that recall, at times, L.A. resident Devendra Banhart.

As it turns out, Banhart is one of the band's biggest fans, having delivered some grade-A dust-jacket praise (minus the brackets):

“[WHAT LAURA SAYS are] amazing musicians, have zero boundaries and their music is full of so many surprises, not just from song to song, but within a single song. I love this band.”

Press has been slow to pick up, but turns out Banhart's got taste. This is good stuff, poppy with just enough psychedelia to keep things elastic. Dig it:
