According to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune and other sources, former Los Angeles Rams place kicker Antonio “Tony” Zendejas was acquitted today of rape by a Pomona Superior Court jury. Zendejas, 48, had been accused of two felonies: rape by use of drugs and sodomy by use of drugs. The prosecution alleged that in January, 2008, Zendejas had drugged a woman in his San Dimas restaurant, taken her to a Red Roof Inn and raped her in one of the motel's rooms. Zendejas, who'd been arrested at his Yorba Linda home the following July, claimed the sex was consensual; the prosecution was unable to show medical evidence of a date-rape drug in the woman's blood. Jurors took only two hours to acquit Zendejas of the charges that could have landed him in prison for 13 years.
