OPENING NIGHT of MORPH at MASH Gallery

November 9, 2019

7pm-10pm

MORPH, a group exhibition exploring figurative distortion.

Throughout art history, artists have intentionally distorted the figure to create some of the most well known and impactful masterpieces. Morph is a collection of contemporary paintings that function together as both an acknowledgment of the historical trajectory of artists creating figurative works, and a deviation from the standard ideas of taste, pushing the boundaries and redesigning figuration as the artist sees fit. By contorting the figure, the artist advances the composition and creates a freakish statement. Through creative surgery, artists compose with the goal to represent not from a place of realism but to instead lead the viewer through an open-ended story of emotional intensity and humor. Morph is an incautious attempt to capture that which does not exist in reality and to provoke a challenging artistic appreciation.

Featured artists include Jordan Betten, David Deweerdt, Shaelin Jornigan, Corey K Lamb, Alexis E. Mabry, Haleh Mashian, Molly Morning-Glory, Erik Mark Sandberg (featured image), Serge Serum, Jayne Anita Smith, Alexander Varvaridze, and Samuelle Richardson.
