The Thrill of It All, Sam Smith brings his arena show to Los Angeles’ Staples Center. A chart-topping, multiple award winner (Grammys, Billboards, Brits and Academy), Smith has found his niche in heartbreak, his androgynous, soulful voice handily lending itself to the left-lover playlist. Not unlike Smith’s debut album, In the Lonely Hour, The Thrill of It All is a succession of ballads, which sometimes feel as if they are just one long, drawn-out lament pushed along by many sweeping orchestral flourishes. Smith’s support artist, one-time Gossip frontperson Beth Ditto, is more than his vocal match. Ditto’s brash and ballsy belt-outs, which sparkle with pop reflections off a disco ball, are a great foil for Smith’s sad-sack croons. Also Wednesday, Aug. 29.
