This year's edition of the Los Angeles Exchange (LAX) Festival runs Oct. 11-21 at various downtown-area venues. The rich panoply of visual, performance, theatrical, musical and interdisciplinary experimental actions includes diverse events at Think Tank, Automata, Los Angeles Theater Center and the Bootleg Theatre. As the name suggests, each edition partners with progressive artists in a city outside of California, and this year it's Philadelphia. There's a lot of lavish pageantry and theatricality to love this year, but one highlight has to be a presentation of L.A.-based visual artist Edgar Arceneaux's live, touring piece, "Until, Until, Until...," which deconstructs and reimagines a televised 1981 broadcast of a performance by Ben Vereen. Intended as part of a national Reagan-inauguration lovefest, when Vereen went off-script at the end to opine on America's intractable racism problems, the TV station cut the feed. Arceneaux builds his immersive multimedia work on the importance of what was censored then, and still matters now.
