Iggy Pop might be the world’s forgotten boy, but for many years James Williamson was the world’s forgotten guitarist. Williamson came to attention in the later, mid-1970s lineup of Iggy & the Stooges, co-writing many of the classic songs on Raw Power and playing fierce, blistering solos that would influence many early punk guitarists. Williamson also collaborated on the sessions that would end up as the underrated Kill City album, which revealed Iggy’s more vulnerable, classic-rock side, especially on the Bob Dylan–ish ballad “I Got Nothing.” Disenchanted by the music business, the guitarist stopped performing music and worked designing computer chips in Silicon Valley before joining the final Stooges reunion. Williamson still retains flashes of his old fiery tone on Behind the Shade, a competent if otherwise unremarkable comeback with The Pink Hearts.
