These are strange times we live in. Margaret Atwood's prescient and provocative 1985 novel, The Handmaid's Tale, might have once seemed like a mere speculative-fiction fable about a futuristic patriarchal society run by theocrats, but real-life events from the Trump administration (not to mention the book's increased recent exposure via its adaptation into a popular web television series) make the story seem more like nonfiction than fiction. The Hammer Museum honors Atwood and New York City conceptual artist Glenn Ligon, whose work examines the intersection of race and identity, at today's Gala in the Garden, which is hosted by Solange and features a performance by Leon Bridges.
