Flip the House provides a fun way to help. In California there are seven swing (aka "purple") districts currently held by Republicans, and this inclusive dance party will split up all proceeds raised equally to each Democratic candidate running for those seats, via the Swing Left organization. (Those districts, by the way, are CA-10, CA-21, CA-25, CA-39, CA-45, CA-48 and CA-49.) The suggested donation is $10 but more is welcome, and there will be raffles and a silent auction as well. The DJ roster includes Hole drummer Patty Schemel, Rudy Bleu Garcia (Club sCUM), Your Mother (Homoccult), Noisy Nora and a performance from post-punk, electro, goth, pop cardio/dance werk-out crew Pony Sweat Aerobics.
Democrats need to flip at least 23 Republican-held seats to retake the House this November, and if the past is an indicator, they just may do it. But in these precarious political times, nothing can be taken for granted, not even precedent for flipping in the past. Whether or not a "blue wave" will wash the Senate clean of conservatism (and provide much-needed challenge and accountability to Trump the rest of his term) remains to be seen, but for those asking, "what can I do?"
