As part of The Getty’s SoCal-wide initiative Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, the Annenberg Space for Photography’s latest exhibit, “Cuba Is,” explores various subcultures of contemporary Cubans “both on and off the island,” from wealthy kids to young punks known as “Los Frikis” to “Chonga” girls in Miami. The more than 120 new and archival images by photographers Elliott Erwitt, Leysis Vera, Raul Canibano, Tria Giovan, Michael Dweck , Claudia Gonzalez, Alexis Rodriguez-Duarte, Tico Torres, Linet Sanchez, Michael Brown, Ernesto Oroza, Geandy Pavon, Orlando Garcia, Alex Webb, Rebecca Norris Webb, Khadis Rosa, Rene Pena, Luis Gispert, Carolina Sandretto, Adrian Fernandez, Hermes Mallea, Henry Eric Hernandez and Maryse Goudreau are accompanied by a documentary, virtual reality experience on the country’s street music scene and additional outdoor display, “Violet Isle: A Duet of Photographs from Cuba.”
