The latest in a string of sexual assaults on or near the UCLA campus in recent years was a case of a young man who broke into a student's apartment and attacked her, prosecutors said this week.
Evan Ryan Baldwin, 22, pleaded not guilty this week to assault with intent to commit rape, according to the L.A. County District Attorney's office.
He was being held in lieu of $1 million bail and …
… was due back in court March 18, D.A.'s spokeswoman Jane Robison told us.
He was arrested by UCLA police about 2:30 p.m. in the 400 block of Landfair Avenue on Feb. 28, according to cops and sheriff's inmate data.
Interestingly, that address is only feet away from the campus' notorious Saxon Steps, a.k.a. the “Rape Trail” where a sexual assault was reported early 2012.
Baldwin is described by authorities as measuring 6 feet and weighing 170 pounds, similar stats to those described by victims in a few other cases, including the one above.
However, at least one of the older descriptions paints a white suspect with blue eyes. Baldwin is dark-skinned with dark eyes (see a photo of him here) .
Nancy Greenstein, director of police community services at UCLA, told us that detectives do not believe Baldwin can be connected to any other attacks on or near campus.
She says he simply doesn't fit the description of suspects in earlier attacks.

On March 18 a date for his preliminary hearing would be set, Robison said. If convicted Baldwin could face life in state prison, the complaint says.
