18-Year-Old Pronounced Dead after Patrol Vehicle Collision near El Cajon Boulevard

LA MESA, CA (March 6, 2023) – Late Saturday morning, Eugene Nelson was killed in a rear-end accident on Interstate 8.

The incident occurred around 11:47 a.m., on the westbound lanes near Grossmont Center Mall just east of El Cajon Boulevard.

Per reports, the driver of a black 2014 Nissan Sentra lost control while traveling at a high rate of speed in wet road conditions. As a result, the Nissan rear-ended an unoccupied CHP vehicle with its emergency lights on in the No.1 lane.

Medical personnel arrived and transported the Nissan driver to Sharp Memorial Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office later identified the victim as 18-year-old Nelson, of El Cajon.

Following preliminary duties, police said Nelson was not wearing a seat belt at the time. Investigators also say the highway patrol officers were investigating two solo-vehicle collisions when the crash occurred.

Once available, further details will be provided.
