Three Dead, Two Hospitalized after Red-Light Collision near Interstate 17

PHOENIX, AZ (July 7, 2023) – Monday night, Esteban Espinoza-Lopez, Majid Al Juhaishi, and Tessa Jeffrey died in a red-light crash. Police arrived to the scene on Thunderbird Road, near Interstate 17 around 11:00 p.m., on July 3rd. Officers say the driver of a white Chevrolet Camaro was heading west on Thunderbird and ran a red light, consequently colliding with a red Chevrolet Traverse. Upon impact, the Traverse then struck a nearby Subaru that was stopped at the intersection. Emergency crews located the Camaro engulfed in flames upon arrival. Medics transported a passenger inside the Camaro, 21-year-old Espinoza Lopez to a hospital where he later died. Personnel also took the driver of the red Traverse, 54-year-old Juhashai to a hospital where he eventually succumbed to his injuries. Investigators say a female passenger inside the red Traverse, 41-year-old Jeffrey was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected onto the road. Due to the extent of injuries sustained, crews pronounced Jeffrey dead at the scene. In addition, medics took two occupants inside the Subaru to a hospital with injuries. Following preliminary duties, police detained the 22-year-old driver of the Camaro while a toxicology report is pending. Once available, further details will be provided.
