A middle-aged Latino man was severely injured after being assaulted on January 17 in Central-Alemeda just after midnight. After being hospitalized at County-USC Medical Center for eight days, Esquivel Castillo died of blunt head trauma on January 25, according to coroner's records.

LAPD investigators told the Los Angeles Times that the 51-year-old was beaten near the corner of 55th Street and Hooper Avenue. At his time of death over a week later, no arrests had been made.

The neighborhood where Castillo was attacked is residential — a local market, church and elementary school are all located within a few blocks.
