81-Year-Old Motorcyclist Killed in Single-Vehicle Collision near Kelso Drive

KELSO, WA (August 16, 2023) – Late Tuesday afternoon, Ernest Smart was killed in a motorcycle accident on State Route 432. The incident occurred around 4:26 p.m., near Kelso Drive just east of Interstate 5. According to reports, Smart was driving a 3-wheeled Can-Am Spyder motorcycle when he left the roadway for reasons unknown. The motorcycle then traveled up an embankment and struck a guard rail before coming to rest on the shoulder. Crews say 81-year-old Smart, of Olympia suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. In addition, he was wearing a helmet at the time. Emergency personnel closed off the surrounding area for a brief time during cleanup and preliminary duties.
