A 36-year-old black man named Eric Redd died February 1 from injuries he had sustained two-and-a-half years earlier.
After Redd was shot in the neck on July 31, 2008, in the 900 block of West 97th Street in Vermont Knolls, he became paralyzed from the neck down. Then, on February 1, Redd was taken to the Centinela Freeman Regional Medical Center in Inglewood, where he died as a result of his neck injury.

According to City News Service, the original South L.A. shooting, which police believed to be possibly gang-related, downed both Redd and another young man at about 10:55 p.m. LAPD Lieutenant Lee Sands said the shooter may have been spotted escaping the scene on a bicycle.
A .380-caliber pistol was also discovered by detectives as they searched the area. Redd, who was 34 at the time, and the other victim, only 19 or 20 years old, were taken to the nearest hospital, where they were treated for their injuries.
At the time, Sands told City News that “both had stable vital signs and were expected to survive.”
