“Who likes to eat girls?” asked burlesque queen Courtney Cruz before a packed house at Bordello on Saturday night. While some in the audience blushed and giggled, most hollered with a resounding “hell yeah” as L.A. Weekly's Best of L.A. '09 winner introduced “Edible Girls,” the November installment of Devil's Playground's monthly downtown residency that featured burlesque performances by sexy gals dressed (and undressed) as their favorite desserts.

As with past performances, Devil's Playground began the night with a live band to get the crowd warmed up and give the fashionably late enough time to arrive and hit the bar before the girls took the stage. We've been following Cruz's burlesque troupe for over a year but, to be honest, rarely do we include the opening band in our coverage. Face it, if you're a bunch of dudes opening up for a crew of gorgeous half-naked girls, don't be surprised if your band ends up overlooked (unless you're Nitzer Ebb with “Video Game Girls” burlesque).

Our pretensions were shoved aside, however, as Long Beach-based band On Blast took the Bordello stage before “Edible Girls” on Saturday night and completely blew us away. Like a love child born from The Doors, Portishead, AA Bondy, Thievery Corporation and The Stone Roses, On Blast's trip hop beats combined with lilting bluesy vocals left us flipping through our rolodex to get this band an L.A. residency asap. There's nothing quite like On Blast happening locally right now and (despite their name which is… meh) the band is a much needed, darker and sexier departure from all the first kiss-obsessed, Silver Lake indie darlings of late.
