UPDATE at 4:02 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, 2016: The mom was charged with suspicion of murder. See our latest story here.

An Echo Park mother was in jail overnight after she was arrested for alleged child endangerment, authorities said. The 11-year-old son of suspect Veronica Aguilar was found dead on Monday, they said.

It's not clear how the boy died, but cops said they found his body “wrapped in a blanket in a closet,” according to a statement from the Los Angeles Police Department. “The investigation revealed that the victim suffered from signs of malnutrition and physical abuse and had been deceased for a few hours,” the LAPD stated.

Officers went to Aguilar's husband's home in the 2200 block of Sunset Boulevard at 2:15 p.m. Monday to take his report that she told him the boy was dead. He is not the victim's father, according to police.

His statement prompted officers to head around the corner, to the 2100 block of Santa Ynez Street in Echo Park, where the 11-year-old's body was discovered, police said. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics declared him dead at the scene.

Aguilar was booked early yesterday on suspicion of child endangerment resulting in death, according to the LAPD and to Los Angeles Sheriff's Department inmate records. She was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail, according to sheriff's information.

Coroner's investigators will try to determine the exact cause of death.

Police are trying to find the boy's biological father. Anyone with information was asked to call the LAPD's Abused Child Section at 213-486- 0586.
