Believe it or not, Echopark and Silver Lake are not the Eastside. Gentrification has erroneously recalibrated the orientation of Los Angeles. The real Eastside lies past the 5 freeway and the L.A. River, where underground and established music venues thrive under the radar. This week, West Coast Sound goes eastward to investigate what lies on other side of the 5.

Glassell Park's Verdugo Bar draws attention for its beer and 1930's era bar, but on two Tuesdays a month, DJ collective Mas Exitos unites North and South America into a delectable melange of musical styles from both sides of the border. From the soul sounds of 1960's Eastsiders to cumbia and lowrider jams, DJ's Lengua, Hoseh, Ganas, and Enorbit drop beats that are as evocative as they are danceable. The DJ's call it a “National Geographic documentary on sound that will take you from the Andes of Peru to the East Side of LA.” Ultimately, Mas Exitos is a cocktail of rare and underground Latin Sounds. Drink it up.
