If the sight of a pelican with a plastic pull tab wrapped around its neck gets to you, or if you want to know why the extinction of bees will dramatically diminish the quality of human life, join other folks who care about the planet at Santa Monica College's Earth Week Celebration: Bees, Bikes & Beaches. The five-day celebration kicks off today, with two consciousness-raising events getting major buzz: From 3 to 5 p.m., check out interactive exhibits designed to raise awareness about the rapidly declining number of bees at “Honeybee Celebration Day.” Bee farmers will be on hand to discuss harvesting organic honey — and to supply samples. Continuing that topic from a global perspective is a 5:30 screening of the 2011 documentary Queen of the Sun: What Are the Bees Telling Us? If those aren't enough to get you off your duff to make the world a better place, maybe the rest of the week's activities will: an EchoHeroes Luncheon honoring individual efforts for greening and conservation, free bicycle registration, an opportunity to observe sustainable building practices at an open house at the college's Center for Environment and Urban Studies, a recycling exchange of home and office goods, a screening of the documentary Urbanized, a community bus ride, a beach cleanup and a screening of Tom Shadyac's inspiring I AM.
