Memorial Day weekend is the traditional kick-off for summer.

Don't start it $10,000 in the hole, which is about what you will pay in fines and legal costs if you get a DUI — not to mention a likely night in jail.

The CHP, the LAPD and the L.A. County Sheriff's Department will be testing you this weekend. Here's our cheat sheet for checkpoints and patrols to beware:

-Tonight the LAPD has a DUI checkpoint scheduled for Vermont Avenue between Pico Boulevard and 12th Street in the Byzantine-Latino Quarter west of Pico-Union. It happens from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m:

-Also tonight from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. there will be a checkpoint on Manchester Avenue between Hoover and Figueroa streets.

-Saturday from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. there will be a checkpoint on Sepulveda Boulevard near Sherman Way in Van Nuys.

-On Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. there will be a drunk-driver “saturation patrol” in the area covered by the LAPD's Hollenbeck Division:

-Starting at 6 p.m. tonight the CHP goes into maximum overdrive, e.g. it's “maximum enforcement period” for the weekend. So freeways will not be immune.

-An L.A. County sheriff's sergeant told us the department is also in maximum DUI enforcement mode for the holiday weekend as part of the “Avoid the 100” program that coordinates such efforts with L.A.'s 100 police agencies.

We also found checkpoints in Pasadena tonight, Pomona tonight, Norwalk tonight and Covina on Saturday night.

Stay safe.
