Surfers have a certain reputation. Let's just say that, in California, they often enjoy the right to partake of legal medicine. But in-the-water delivery? That's ridiculous.

Authorities say they stopped a small fishing boat after those inside had tried to land not far from Huntington Beach Pier yesterday morning, where the final day of the U.S. Open of Surfing was taking place.

The trio of Mexicans on-board, according to the Orange County Register, were suspected by authorities of being drug smugglers. Here's what happened:

The boat, called a “panga,” cruised up near shore but turned out to sea after lifeguards spotted it. Lifeguard officials told the Register someone threw a package overboard before the vessel headed out.

By then it was too late: Orange County Sheriff's officials on the water gave chase with the help of radar and caught up to the boat near Newport Pier. The trio on-board was arrested.

That package, by the way, was never found, though there was no evidence suggesting that anyone in the water was the intended recipient.
