The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) released footage of an Oct. 13 incident where officers shot and killed a man allegedly threatening to stab his mother and holding her hostage.

LAPD officers responded to a call of “assault with a deadly weapon” at 5:50 a.m., with a man later identified as Carlos Arias. Officers said Arias had a history of schizophrenia and was “possibly suicidal,” although that has not been independently confirmed.

The call was made in Spanish, with the caller saying the suspect was choking his mother, dragging her into the apartment from outside while holding a knife. Security footage showed the suspect and the woman in the parking lot outside the apartment complex, with the suspect yelling in Spanish that he was going to cut her.

Officials with the LAPD said the officers attempted to speak with Arias for several minutes, from inside their vehicles, to de-escalate the situation to no avail.

Arias and his mother then went inside the apartment and LAPD body-worn camera footage shows that officers knocked on the door, asking Arias to come out and saying, “We’re not going to hurt you. You’re not in trouble, man.”

In response, Arias can be heard yelling through the camera, “I’ll cut her head off.”

That is when an officer said, “Oh shit. OK, we got to kick that door in, guys.” The same officer said he could see Arias and his mother through the window and described his movements to the rest of the officers, saying he was feet away from his mother and talking to her.

The officers then asked Arias to go outside multiple times, warning that they were going to kick down the door if he didn’t.

The scene escalated after the officer said Carlos put his mother in a headlock, then confirming that a knife was visible in his hand.

The body-worn camera from the officer who entered first showed a person who appeared to be Arias, holding the knife in the air, while hovering over a person who appeared to be his mother on the floor.

That is when the officer fired two shots, with Arias falling to the floor and the knife falling from his hands.

Arias was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

While the LAPD said the investigation is still in its early stages, the video footage is being released for the public to “gave a better understanding” of the incident.

No other injuries were reported in the incident.
