Hollywood's legendary photographer gets a fresh look at a landmark gallery exhibition at the Palos Verdes Art Center through April 21, with a special gallery tour with Kirkland in person on Thursday, April 18 at 11am.
Photographer Douglas Kirkland is a star in his own right in the Hollywood firmament. The word iconic is overused but when it comes to Kirkland’s decades at the forefront of celebrity portraiture, it’s simply true. A young photographer at Look magazine, it was when he joined Life in the ’60s that everything went stratospheric.
Besides literally thousands of gigs capturing indelible images of hundreds of silver-screen luminaries both in the studio and on the set of major motion picture productions, Kirkland has published a dozen books surveying his career in marquee and intimate scales. L.A. Weekly recently took a look at his newest book, Physical Poetry Alphabet, which was released late last year.
Palos Verdes Art Center, 5504 W. Crestridge Road, Rancho Palos Verdes; Mon.-Sat., 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; Sun., 1-4 p.m.; through April 21; free. (310) 541-2479, pvartcenter.org.
