The hemp-derived compound CBD has quickly become one of the most popular holistic therapies used by wellness advocates. People turn to CBD in the hopes of finding balance in many areas of health, from mood and stress to pain and general wellbeing.

CBD belongs to a class of health-promoting compounds found in hemp and marijuana plants termed cannabinoids. THC and CBD are the two most abundant cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, and as such, have become the most widely used cannabis-derived compounds.

But did you know that there are over 100 phytocannabinoids found in the hemp plant? Each of these nutrients has the potential of impacting health in unique ways, either when used alone or as part of a cannabinoid blend.

Enter: CBG.

CBG is one of the newest cannabinoids to earn the enthusiasm of researchers and holistic health advocates. Read on to learn why there’s so much buzz around CBG, and how you can get your hands on this revolutionary compound (hint: the best product on the market is CBD + CBG Maximum Relief by Blue Sky CBD).

What is CBG?

CBG (cannabigerol) is a cannabinoid found in small quantities—typically less than 2%—in hemp plants. CBG, just like CBD, is non-intoxicating—meaning it does not impair your cognition or mental clarity the way that THC does.

What makes CBG stand out amongst cannabinoids is that it’s the precursor to THC, CBD, and other well-known health-promoting cannabinoids. For this reason, CBG is often called the “mother” of cannabinoids.

What Does CBG Do?

When consumed, CBG interacts with receptors found throughout the human body. You can think of CBG as a key and the receptors as locks. Thanks to CBG’s molecular shape, it binds well with certain types of receptors. By connecting to receptors, CBG influences and balances various aspects of human health and wellbeing.

Many of the receptors that CBG interacts with are part of the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a vast network of receptors, internal cannabinoids termed endocannabinoids, and chemicals that synthesize and break down endocannabinoids.

The ECS plays one primary role: maintaining internal balance, a concept known as homeostasis. The ECS influences mood, appetite, sleep cycles, pain, the stress response, the immune response, and more.

You can think of the ECS as a conductor that signals various parts of the body to calm down or become more active when needed. Take mood, for instance. There are times when you might feel down, and others when you’re overly stressed. The ECS is involved in recalibrating your internal response to support a balanced state.

But here’s the thing: your ECS may not always function at 100%. External cannabinoids like CBG and CBD activate the ECS, supporting its function in various aspects of wellbeing.

CBG vs CBD – What’s the Difference?

CBD and CBG are two different phytocannabinoids, a class of nutrients found in hemp plants. Even though they both impact human health and wellbeing through modulating the ECS, the ways they do so is different. As such, their impacts on human health may also vary.

In some ways, CBG acts a bit more like THC in the body. Both THC and CBG have a strong affinity towards receptors in the ECS. What this means is that CBG and THC directly connect to ECS receptors, influencing ECS function.

CBD, on the other hand, has a less direct (although no less powerful) effect on the ECS. CBD has low affinity for ECS receptors, meaning it doesn’t readily bind to them. Instead, it impacts the ECS by other means. For example, CBD consumption prevents the degradation of the body’s own endocannabinoids, thus enhancing endogenous cannabinoid levels.

What’s promising about CBG is that it influences and balances the ECS in a similar way as THC, but without any of the mind-altering effects.

While the potential benefits of CBG are vast, research is in the early stages. Animal studies have noted beneficial effects of CBG on numerous conditions, including inflammatory colitis, glaucoma, and neurodegenerative diseases. Keep in mind that the impact of CBG may be different in humans than it is in animals. More research is needed to elucidate how CBG influences human health.

Is CBG + CBD More Powerful Than CBD Alone?

Because CBD and CBG influence health via different pathways, chances are that they each offer unique health benefits. When taken together, you reap the individual benefits simultaneously.

What’s more, scientists have long believed that the compounds within hemp work better together than apart. This idea is termed the entourage effect. For instance, THC’s adverse effects are dampened by CBD.

“I have suffered from rheumatoid arthritis for 30 years. I have had to deal with lots of pain and generally very little sleep. I started using Blue Sky CBD’s 3000mg oil about a year ago. It helped with the pain which allowed me to get some sleep, but when I saw Blue Sky had introduced a new product that was for maximum relief, I decided to give it a try. I can honestly say, in 30 years, I have never had anything relieve my arthritis pain like this new product. It is amazing! I highly recommend it for anyone dealing with extreme pain.” – Wally Smith
