Randall RobertsThose of you lucky enough to have been at either of the two Dirty Projectors shows last night will understand, perhaps. Or maybe you saw the Brooklyn band at the Troubadour in the summer, when they did a lot of the music from their totally magnetic new Bitte Orca; or at the Echoplex two years ago, when they performed songs from their great Rise Above album, on which they drastically reinterpreted the entirety of Black Flag's Damaged.
From the Echoplex to the Troubadour to the Jensen Rec Center to Walt Disney Concert Hall, where, it was just announced, the band will co-headline with Los Angeles Philharmonic on February 27, 2010.
The Projectors/Phil collaboration will be much like last year's Grizzly Bear performance at Disney with the Phil. On that night the Phil presented works by Stravinsky, Britten, and Boccherini to a demographic much less inclined to hit Disney for classical — unless a Brooklyn band is on the bill. Following an intermission, Grizzly Bear performed. There was no Grizzly with LA Phil string section or anything; just a high-falutin mash-up that made complete sense coupled top to bottom.
No word yet on what pieces the Phil will perform on the evening with the Dirty Projectors, but main Projector Dave Longstreth is apparently well-versed with the repertoire, and reports are that he and Phil VP of artistic planning Chad Smith had a fascinating, lively first conversation about the possibilities.
